Tough to mop up taxman's outstanding demand

Untraceable assessees, insufficient assets, and insolvency proceedings contribute to the massive backlog. Indirect tax arrears also climbed, exceeding ₹4.26 lakh crore. Staff shortages plague both tax departments, hindering collection efforts.
